Professor Mark Orams is based at the Auckland University of Technology where his teaching and research focuses on marine recreation, adventure and conservation. He has a long background in competitive sailing and was part of Sir Peter Blake’s winning crew onboard Steinlager 2 in the Whitbread Round the World Yacht Race. He also worked alongside Sir Peter during Team New Zealand’s successful defence of the America’s Cup in 2000 and was onboard scientist for the Amazon voyage for Blakexpeditions. He was the inaugural Executive Director and a founding trustee of the Sir Peter Blake Trust and he authored the book “Blake: Leader. Leadership lessons from a great New Zealander”. In more recent times Mark has become known as “The Sailing Professor” for his media work during the 2017 America’s Cup.
Mark was part of the 2014 Young Blake Expedition to the Sub-Antarctic and serves as our Expedition Leader for the 2018 YBE to the Kermadec Islands.
