Our Southern Wilderness Revealed

The Auckland Islands truly are a wild environment.

Its inhospitable climate deters all but the hardiest visitors. Although some have attempted to settle on this southerly outpost, the harsh environment has driven them back to the comfort of more northerly latitudes. With very few landmasses available to them this far south, sea birds and marine mammals congregate here at breeding times. On top of that the unique conditions on the islands have resulted in high rates of endemism in the plants and animals that live here and the overall diversity of species is disproportionate to the Islands' size.

This poster attempts to reveal the mysteries of New Zealand's often forgotten deep south by linking its history and biology to concepts from the New Zealand curriculum.
