Duane in the dunes
Today we visited the Abel Tasman National Park, it was beautfiful with golden sandy beaches one after the other. We got on a ferry at Kaiteriteri Beach and headed to Anchorage Bay, to the DOC hut. We learned about the pest eradication methods they have used there to bring the predator numbers down, which has allowed the bird life to flourish.
On the beach at Anchorage we randomely met a famous Kiwi called Duane Major (he was swimming in the water with his kids there, thats why he has no top on!) who ran a Givealittle (like Kickstarter) campaign with his best friend, to get the NZ public to buy a beach called Awaroa Inlet & stop it from being sold into private ownership. The campaign worked and a few weeks ago 40,000 New Zealand households contibuted just over NZD$2M to buy Awaroa Inlet & keep it open to the public, forever. People power! That beach is not far from here, so it must be georgeous.
What an amazing day!!!!!
