Helen Dobbin

WHAKATANE INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL

Helen is the Environmental Science teacher at Whakatane Intermediate school. Environmental Science is one of five technology subjects at the school. In this role Helen has the opportunity to teach every student for 15 hours of environmental science each year.

Previously Helen taught Physical Education and Outdoor Education in secondary schools, before moving to two small Eco trusts in the Whakatane area, the Manawahe Eco trust and the Whakatane Kiwi trust teaching their Education programmes. Whilst working for the Trusts Helen was introduced to local people in the Whakatane district that are passionate about protecting the biodiversity in the area. It was this change in career direction into Environmental Education that led Helen to be part of the Blake Inspire for teachers course in 2022.  The Inspire for Teachers course has helped Helen on her journey to gain more knowledge and skills to help with her programme development and teaching of Year 7 and 8 students at Whakatane Intermediate.  Helen is enthusiastic about the Environment and as a teacher is dedicated to inspiring students to become equally as enthusiastic.   Helen is really excited to be part of the 2023 Blake Expedition to the sub Antarctic islands, she is looking forward to sharing this experience with the students that she teaches.
