Abbie Cider

Programme Manager

Kia ora! My name is Abbie, and I work for BLAKE as the NZ-VR Programme Manager in Ōtautahi Christchurch. I am really excited to have this role, as it combines my love for the ocean and my passion for environmental education.

My connection with the ocean started when I was nine and went snorkeling for the first time in Fiji. Since then, I have completed a BSc in Marine Biology and a Master of Marine Conservation at Victoria University of Wellington. With a love for warm water, I focused my studies on coral reefs and the current coral bleaching crisis.

After my Masters, I completed an internship with Mountains to Sea, an organization that connects children to their local marine reserves. Through this experience, I discovered an interest in science communication and environmental education. I find it incredibly rewarding to see children develop a connection with the marine environment.

Outside of work, I enjoy spending time at the beach and traveling! I recently went solo backpacking around Greece, Italy, and Croatia. I spent most of my days hiking to tiny beaches to snorkel and watch the sunset. A highlight of the trip was SCUBA diving on a shipwreck on the little Greek island of Paxos. I also love horse riding, and I once spent a summer on a ranch in America teaching horse riding.

I am delighted to have this opportunity to be part of the BLAKE team, inspiring the next generation to care for our oceans.
