Caitlin Berquist has come a long way since a childhood spent wandering the beaches of Whakatāne and contemplating why the dune erosion was seemingly speeding up, and the landscape looked different after every storm.

The 21-year-old University of Waikato student and former Whakatāne High School student has now completed her University of Waikato BLAKE Antartica Ambassadorship, where she had a profound realisation of how she could be a part of the quest to understand Earth's processes in vital climate change research.

“Looking down from that helicopter flight at the Taylor Valley surrounds was possibly my favorite memory. I think it was when I began to realize the enormity of what I was getting myself into, picturing the weeks ahead where this would be my life,” she recalls.

Our BLAKE Expeditioners have made it back to Maungahuka Auckland Islands, and are soaking up the beautiful Subantarctic scenery before they start the journey back to Bluff.

Nature's diversity is on full display here - the team is discovering a completely different world of flora and fauna compared to Campbell Island! 🌿🐦

Swipe to see our adventurers making their way to shore and Josh's stunning wildlife captures that truly speak for themselves.

Can't wait to hear all the stories once the team is back in range⛴️

Halfway through our BLAKE Expedition in the Subantarctic Islands ✨

An update from our team on their final day on Campbell Island;

"Along with going ashore to explore the islands, we have had the opportunity to hear from Commanding Officer Bronwyn Heslop about her time in the Navy.
We have also got to hear from the other agencies on board, including DOC, Ngai Tahu, and Defence Science and Technology!"

Experiencing remote wilderness while learning from experts across multiple fields is part of what makes this experience so unique for our students and teachers.🙌
