Ethan McCormick
Ethan is a former student of Howick College where he was Head Boy and Student Trustee. In 2018 he established the Howick College Trapping Programme with a small team of students from the School Enviro group. Supported by The Friends of Mangemangeroa Society and Pest Free Howick, the programme centred its efforts in the nearby Mangemangeroa Reserve, eventually growing to incorporate a line of forty rat and stoat traps last year. For these efforts Ethan was a finalist in the 2020 New Zealand Biosecurity Awards and the trapping team were finalists in 2020 Auckland Mayoral Conservation Awards. Last year he competed in the 2020 Eureka Awards National Finals and won a Department of Conservation Scholarship with his project ‘Catching the Kauri Killer’ which proposed a new rapid test for Kauri Dieback. Ethan was one of seventy students to attend the 2020 Blake Inspire programme. Ethan currently works part-time as a Pest Free Howick Conservation Assistant and will this year be attending the University of Auckland to study a Bachelor of Science/Bachelor of Arts Conjoint.
