Lachie Scarsbrook

After completing a Bachelor of Science in Geology and Zoology at the University of Otago, Lachie started a Masters in Paleogenetics; using DNA recovered from ancient bones to understand how human colonization and climate change have impacted Aotearoa’s unique lizard species. This passion for using the past to solve modern-day issues stemmed from working as a lab-technician on various international research projects, including using ancient DNA to understand the long-term biological effects of commercial exploitation of snapper populations.

When he is not in the lab, Lachie is putting his environmentalist values into action, being a regular community volunteer at Orokonui Ecosanctuary in Dunedin. He is also a positive advocate for science education, whether it be organizing outreach sessions for local schools, assisting in coordination of ‘Hands-On at Otago’, or teaching undergraduate students across a variety of subjects.

Lachie is incredibly proud to have been selected as a BLAKE Ambassador; and is particularly excited for the opportunity to work alongside DoC in actively protecting our countries iconic taonga. He hopes to use Blake’s online platform to bridge the gap between conservation management practices and the general public through interactive media.
