Position: NIWA Fisheries modeller
On this voyage I nearly stepped on some slime that washed out an oreo stomach. I like stomach slime, so I picked it up. Turns out it may be a new species of squid. Who’d’ve thought? Cool.
I’ve been working at NIWA for 6 years and 9 months. Before that I was a student in statistics and Math at Victoria University. As a fisheries modeller I count fish!
My favourite thing about the job are the fish nerds. I’m really uncoordinated and accident prone so I’m really surprised they let me on the boat. I like all of the voyages I’ve been on.
For those who are interested in a career in science, 1) study stats and coding, 2) question everything and 3) don’t believe what they tell you – find out for yourself AND, then be able to tell a story about it!
