Sarah-Jane Blake
Sarah-Jane is an experimental artist, performance designer and deviser. She has spent a lot of time living and working afloat and the ocean is present in much of her work.
Passionate about community engagement and social art, education intertwines through parts of her practice. Currently she is exhibiting in a collaborative show ‘I am Island and Sea’, NZ Maritime Museum, inspired by young voices from Tamaki Makaurau and highlighting our interconnected world. Recent work includes an immersive performance utilising virtual reality which won an award at Whangarei Fringe 2020 for its genre bending fusion and was chosen to represent NZ as part of the Aoteaora Garden, ARS international festival 2021. She is interested in how mixes of new technologies (digital) and (hand made) art can find alternative ways of seeing and explore different dimensions of creative thought. Her work investigates menacing themes with a bizarre humour and naive aesthetic. Man vs Nature and the decline of the environment is a strong theme throughout her work but communicated within magical and transformative experiences.
