In a world where remote work often defines our daily routines, there’s something magical about bringing a team together in person. Last week, the BLAKE team gathered in Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland) for two days of professional development, strategic planning, and team bonding that reminded us all why we do what we do.
The team at BLAKE are united by a shared mission to foster environmental leadership in the next generation. As Sir Peter Blake wrote in his final log entry, “we want to restart people caring from the environment’ and this remains at the core of the BLAKE programmes. Our team days covered everything from programme facilitation training to deep discussions about BLAKE’s strategic direction. But it was the moments in between that truly cemented our connection as a team.
Exploring the rocky shores of East Coast Bays, walking through urban bush, and a surf expedition to Muriwai Beach offered a powerful reminder of why we’re committed to protecting Aotearoa and our planet. There’s something profound about discussing environmental stewardship while feeling the salt spray on your face and sand between your toes.
As we move into 2025, we’re feeling refreshed in our approach to programmes – it has reinforced one of the fundamental pillars of our strategic plan: our people. With BLAKE’s growing team across Aotearoa, we’re investing in our team’s development, creating clear succession pathways, and ensuring our expanded reach becomes a strength rather than a challenge.
The excitement of growth is evident in our team, but it’s the human connections formed during days like these that will carry us forward. Watching team members share their stories, support each other’s growth, and collaborate across regions confirmed what we’ve always known – our strength lies in our people.
As we returned to our respective regions, we have a renewed sense of purpose and connection.
Because at BLAKE, we understand that to inspire the next generation of environmental leaders, we must first nurture the educators who guide them.
